Specifying another JVM to launch Talend Studio

Overview

You could have more than one JVM installation on your machine, and you would like to use another JVM to launch Talend Studio for a particular purpose. This tutorial introduces the ways to specify another JVM to launch Talend Studio under Windows and Linux systems.

Environment

This procedure was written with:

  • Talend Open Studio for Data Integration 5.0-r72978
  • JDK version: Sun JDK build 1.6.0_26-b03
  • Operating system: Windows XP SP3

Talend verified this procedure to be compatible with Data Integration releases starting from v4.2.3.

Procedure

You are able to specify another JVM to launch Talend Studio. Following are the ways on Windows and Unix/Linux systems respectively.

On Windows

Here are two examples of how you can specify the path of JRE under Windows XP. Suppose that the installation path of Talend Studio and Oracle JRE are as follows:

Talend Studio installation path: D:\tos\5.0\studio\TOS_DI-r72978-V5.0.0

Oracle JRE installation pathE:\app\Java\jre1.6.0_11

Launching Studio from a script file

  1. Create a bat file called studio_startup.bat under the Studio installation directory. Add the following contents to the file:

    For 32-bit systems:

    TOS_DI-win32-x86.exe -vm E:\app\Java\jre1.6.0_11\bin

    For 64-bit systems:

    TOS_DI-win32-x86_64.exe -vm E:\app\Java\jre1.6.0_11\bin
  2. Save the file and click on the bat file to launch Talend Studio.

Launching studio from command prompt

  1. Open the CMD window and CD into the studio install directory. Execute the command as below:

    For 32-bit systems:

    D:\tos\5.0\studio\TOS_DI-r72978-V5.0.0>TOS_DI-win32-x86.exe -vm E:\app\Java\jre1.6.0_11\bin

    For 64-bit systems:

    D:\tos\5.0\studio\TOS_DI-r72978-V5.0.0>TOS_DI-win32-x86_64.exe -vm E:\app\Java\jre1.6.0_11\bin

On Unix / Linux

Suppose the installation path of Oracle JRE is as follows:

Oracle JRE installation path: /opt/Java/jre1.6.0_11

  1. CD into the studio installation directory, and execute the command as below:

    For 32-bit systems:

    [user@ip TOS_DI-r72978-V5.0.0] ./TOS_DI-linux-gtk-x86 -vm /opt/Java/jre1.6.0_11/bin

    For 64-bit systems:

    [user@ip TOS_DI-r72978-V5.0.0] ./TOS_DI-linux-gtk-x86_64 -vm /opt/Java/jre1.6.0_11/bin
