svn: No buffer space available

Overview

This exception may occur when you try to connect to a remote project stored on SVN. This article describes in details the issue and provides a solution.

Environment

This article applies only to Talend Administration Center and Talend Studio when installed on a Windows 2008 r2 64-bit system, and when Talend Studio tries to connect to a remote project.

Symptoms/Description

You may get the following error when Talend Studio tries to open a remote project:

!ENTRY org.eclipse.team.svn.core.svnnature 4 0 2013-03-14 11:14:54.497
!MESSAGE SVN: '0x00000107: Synchronizing' operation finished with error
!SUBENTRY 1 org.eclipse.team.svn.core.svnnature 4 0 2013-03-14 11:14:54.497
!MESSAGE Synchronize operation failed.
!STACK 0
org.eclipse.team.svn.core.connector.SVNConnectorException: svn: No buffer space available (maximum connections reached?): connect
svn: OPTIONS request failed on '/svn/dev521/MASTER_DATA_CUSTOMER/trunk/BonitaRepo_MASTER_DATA_CUSTOMER/trunk/BonitaRepo_MASTER_DATA_CUSTOMER_My%20Application%20Language'

You can find the detailed stack trace in the log file, which is located in Talend Studio Installation path/workspace/.metadata/.log. A full log example is attached to this article.

The reason for this error is because the port number used for TCP connections between Talend Studio and SVN server is greater than 5000. This is a known issue related to this Microsoft Windows system; you will find more information in this Microsoft Support Knowledge Base article.

Resolution

To fix this issue, we suggest that you install the Talend Studio on one of the compatible Operating Systems which are certified by Talend. A Windows 2008 r2 64-bit system is not a supported Operating System for Talend Studio.

However, if you still want to install your Talend Studio on a Windows 2008 r2 64-bit system, you can follow the steps below, which are also provided by Microsoft Support Knowledge Base. Note however that Talend shall NOT be held liable for any issue that may occur due to this modification made to the Windows registry.

  1. Start the Registry Editor.
  2. Locate the following subkey in the registry, and then click Parameters:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
  3. On the Edit menu, click New, and then add the following registry entry:
    Value Name: MaxUserPort
       Value Type: DWORD
       Value data: 65534
       Valid Range: 5000-65534 (decimal)
       Default: 0x1388 (5000 decimal)
  4. Exit the Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
