How to Extract from MS SQL Database

Hi all,
I'm new to Talend and would appreciate any pointers/advice.
Objective: Create an output (Can be Excel) using a MS SQL query that joins several tables within a MS SQL Database.
So far, I've managed to create the DB Connection successfully, Create the Meta Data of all Tables within the Database.
then created: tMSSQLinput  -> Tmap -> Exceloutput.
Which works just fine for simple extracts of individual and basic joins of more than one table in the database. However the query that I want to run is far more complex. Ideally, I'd like to run the query on the MS SQL database within Talend, view the data, and save the extract in an excel output file.
I've saved the Query under the Queries drop down of the Db connection, and it returns columns when I run it through the SQL builder window, but on the canvas it doesn't create any meta data which I can then output in excel.
I think I'm not using the right features of Talend. If anyone could point me in the right direction would be really grateful. Happy to elaborate further if I've not explained clearly my problem.
Thanks in advance

Could you please take a look at document about:TalendHelpCenter:Centralizing database metadata to see if it is what you are looking for?
